"Lagersmit adds engineered sealing products to our portfolio and strengthens our presence in the attractive marine market," said Christopher Coughlin, Timken executive vice president and president of Industrial Motion. "The business serves leading propulsion manufacturers, ship owners, pump makers and other industrial customers around the globe that require advanced sealing systems. Lagersmit is a high-quality brand with premium products that are highly complementary to our existing portfolio." Lagersmit was founded in 1856 and employs approximately 90 people. The business is expected to generate around $40 million in revenue in calendar year 2023. Results for the business will be included in the Industrial Motion segment. The extractors, which are available in six different sizes and for a workpiece outside diameter of up to 440 mm, are highly versatile and can be used as two or three-arm extractors. Hydraulic extractors HSP-43 to HSP-303, which can also be used as two or three-arm extractors, are suitable for large bearings, couplings, and rings with high extraction forces. The dismounting of workpieces up to an outside diameter of 620 mm is possible courtesy of six different extractor sizes with a maximum extraction force of 294 kN. Both the mechanical and hydraulic extractors of series MSP, HSP, and HXP have a self-centering function to enable easy and safe positioning on the workpiece. Vesconite Bearings , a global supplier of bearing and wear materials, is taking strides towards sustainability and environmental responsibility by implementing a comprehensive solar energy solution at its Free State-based factory in South Africa. The initiative, spearheaded by Factory Manager Robin Crabb and CEO Dr Jean-Patrick Leger, involves a significant investment in solar infrastructure to reduce the factory's reliance on the power grid and make substantial progress in becoming more environmentally friendly. As of mid-November, Phase I of the project is 80% complete, with the installation of steelwork on concrete slabs to support 325 kVA of solar panels. The panels are being loaded at present, marking a crucial milestone in the transition to solar energy. Simultaneously, Phase II is underway, encompassing the installation of an additional sub-station, the installation and commissioning of two generators, inverters with a capacity of 700 kVA, and a 500 kVA uninterrupted power supply (UPS) system. According to Crabb, "Making the sub-station live is a significant step forward, with approximately 25% of Phase II already completed." The completion of Phases I and II is targeted for the end of 2023, contingent on timely equipment deliveries from suppliers. The machine’s grinding infeed stroke is the largest available among competing machines, with a U-axis range of -3mm to +50mm relative to the spindle center. This provides the flexibility to grind small and large diameter holes, as well as multiple features, using a single wheel in a continuous, automatic mode. Wireless monitoring of assets helps predict machine failure before it can escalate into a serious problem, such as an unscheduled shutdown. Ceramic components are used in key growth areas like wind power, rail transport and aerospace Investment strengthens Schweinfurt location; close collaboration with Schaeffler Luxembourg Establishment of ball grinding shop boosts Schaeffler’s flexibility and optimizes value creation chain One hundred and forty years after Friedrich Fischer from Schweinfurt first made mass production of hardened steel balls possible, a ball grinding shop is once again being built at what is now Schaeffler in Schweinfurt. However, the focus is now on ceramic balls rather than steel balls. These ceramic balls are used in high-precision rolling bearings for applications in key growth sectors like wind power, aerospace, and virtually all electrification applications. The blanks for the grinding shop will be made from silicon nitride at the recently acquired production site at Livange in Luxembourg. Ceramic materials offer a high degree of hardness, low specific weight, low friction, and electrical insulation properties. They are used wherever conventional materials cannot provide the necessary performance and stability and where there are special requirements for the electrical shielding of components. The ceramic components produced in Schweinfurt and Livange will be used in many promising growth areas like wind power, railway, aerospace, and medical and electric machinery, and will rapidly gain in importance in the light of the increasing electrification in all industries. Technology of the future at Schweinfurt site In January 2023, Schaeffler completed its acquisition of specialty manufacturer CERASPIN, which has been developing and producing premium ceramic products in Livange for more than 25 years. The capacity to grind ceramic balls represents a further step in the consolidation of activities at the Schweinfurt site, in the ball bearing center at the headquarters of the company’s Industrial division. A slow U.S. economy and high interest rates have taken a toll on robot orders in North American, resulting in a decline for the second quarter in a row after record purchases in 2021 and 2022. According to the latest report from the Association for Advancing Automation (A3), companies ordered 7,697 robots valued at $457 million from April to July 2023, a 37% decline in robot orders and 20% drop in value over the same period in 2022. When combined with first quarter results, the robotics market in North America is down 29% compared to the first half of last year with a total of 16,865 robots ordered. This drop comes after a record 2022, where North American companies ordered 44,196 robots, up 11% over 2021, the previous record. “Over the last five years, we’ve seen a steady acceleration of robot orders as all industries have struggled with a labor shortage and more non-automotive companies recognize the tremendous value automation provides,” said Alex Shikany, vice president of membership and business intelligence, A3. ”After this post-COVID surge, however, we’re seeing a drawback in purchases, exacerbated by the slow economy and high interest rates. A new version of the MESYS shaft and rolling bearing analysis software including new functionality is available. The bearing analysis software allows the calculation of the load distribution within the bearing and bearing life according to ISO/TS 16281 and it is integrated in a shaft system calculation with additional possibilities like modal analysis, strength calculation for shafts and interfaces to gear calculations. Currently the software is used by customers in 31 countries on 4 continents. The new version is now available. General extensions The bearing databases from Barden/HQW and SKF are updated and a new database from NSK is added. The encrypted Barden/HQW database contains the internal geometry while the SKF and NSK databases only contain catalog data. Custom diagrams can now be defined based on the input in the parameter variation. They can be added to the graphics menu or the main report. Application related diagrams can be defined easily and saved with the calculation file. The software was available in both a 32-bit and a 64-bit version for now 12 years. Now the 32-bit version is not supported anymore and only a 64-bit version is available. Extensions in the bearing calculation The X/Y-factors for the life calculation according to ISO 281 can optionally be calculated from the free contact angle instead of the nominal contact angle. This allows to consider bearing clearance especially for deep groove ball bearings in life according to ISO 281. For the calculation with elastic surroundings now the gap width to the housing can be specified in addition to ring deformations. This allows to differentiate between a cylindrical bearing ring in a non-cylindrical housing and a non-cylindrical bearing ring in a cylindrical housing.
