    The Timken Company (NYSE: TKR; www.timken.com), a global leader in engineered bearings and industrial motion products, has acquired Lagersmit, a Netherlands-based manufacturer of highly engineered sealing solutions for demanding marine, dredging, water, tidal energy and other industrial applications. "Lagersmit adds engineered sealing products to our portfolio and strengthens our presence in the attractive marine market," said Christopher Coughlin, Timken executive vice president and president of Industrial Motion. "The business serves leading propulsion manufacturers, ship owners, pump makers and other industrial customers around the globe that require advanced sealing systems. Lagersmit is a high-quality brand with premium products that are highly complementary to our existing portfolio." Lagersmit was founded in 1856 and employs approximately 90 people. The business is expected to generate around $40 million in revenue in calendar year 2023. Results for the business will be included in the Industrial Motion segment. With incorrect mounting and dismounting accounting for around ten to twenty percent of all bearing failures, the products are applied at precisely the location where the use of the right tool is essential. The BETEX range of dismounting tools belongs to the special tool manufacturer BEGA International B.V., which has been a fully-fledged subsidiary of Schaeffler since July 2021. The products have been under the umbrella of Schaeffler’s strategic Lifetime Solutions business area since October 2023 and are part of the industrial maintenance portfolio. Dismounting made easy for maintenance personnel Mechanical self-centering pullers MSP-2/3-120 to MSP-2/3-440 are among the products included in the expanded product range and have the task of ensuring that small to medium-sized bearings, couplings, and rings can be removed safely and with ease. The extractors, which are available in six different sizes and for a workpiece outside diameter of up to 440 mm, are highly versatile and can be used as two or three-arm extractors. Hydraulic extractors HSP-43 to HSP-303, which can also be used as two or three-arm extractors, are suitable for large bearings, couplings, and rings with high extraction forces. The dismounting of workpieces up to an outside diameter of 620 mm is possible courtesy of six different extractor sizes with a maximum extraction force of 294 kN. Both the mechanical and hydraulic extractors of series MSP, HSP, and HXP have a self-centering function to enable easy and safe positioning on the workpiece. The uniform inward and outward adjustment of the arms makes the extractors easy to use, and the adjustment mechanism in the form of a thread ensures that the arms are securely seated on the workpiece and cannot become detached. “With the inclusion of self-centering extractors in the expanded product portfolio, we are creating the basis for smart and accelerated handling in the dismounting of rolling bearings, couplings, and other components. Phase III, scheduled to begin in late December, aims to double the solar capacity by an additional 325 kVA. Challenges in steel supply may influence the timeline, but Vesconite Bearings remains committed to its sustainability goals. Additionally, consideration is being given to purchasing a 1 MW battery system, enabling the storage of solar energy for peak consumption times during the night. This investment aligns with Vesconite Bearings' vision for its 'lights-out' facility, intended to operate 24/7 for large-volume order production, circumventing challenges posed by load-shedding from South African electricity provider Eskom. To enhance security, the company is also installing a 1.8 m electric fence around the solar system.     The high-performance J350G jig grinder offers application flexibility, accuracy, reliability, and user-friendly operation. The machine bed consists of a thick, highly rigid casting supported by three level points, assuring consistent perpendicularity and parallelism. Built-in, custom-designed Heidenhain scales contribute to ±0.0007mm accuracy on the X-, Y- and Z-axis. Table longitudinal travel (X-axis) is 500mm, transverse travel (Y-axis) is 300mm, and quill travel (Z-axis) is 100mm. Maximum distance from the table surface to the grinding spindle nose is 450mm. The machine’s work surface is 700mm x 350mm and permissible table load is 300kg. Table and saddle maximum rapid feed rates are 2,000mm/min and grinding feed rates are variable from 0.1mm/min to 2,000mm/min. The standard high-frequency spindle motor operates from 9,000rpm to 45,000rpm. A variety of spindle motor options include an air-turbine motor with 75,000rpm capability.     Following the completion of a strategic review of its Aerospace business, SKF is further strengthening and investing in its Aerospace core areas, but also exploring strategic options to fully or partially exit business lines that are non-core. These areas will be further strengthened through accelerated investments, including digitalization, automation, and additional modernization activities of the Group’s factories. The blanks for the grinding shop will be made from silicon nitride at the recently acquired production site at Livange in Luxembourg.     A slow U.S. economy and high interest rates have taken a toll on robot orders in North American, resulting in a decline for the second quarter in a row after record purchases in 2021 and 2022. According to the latest report from the Association for Advancing Automation (A3), companies ordered 7,697 robots valued at $457 million from April to July 2023, a 37% decline in robot orders and 20% drop in value over the same period in 2022. When combined with first quarter results, the robotics market in North America is down 29% compared to the first half of last year with a total of 16,865 robots ordered. This drop comes after a record 2022, where North American companies ordered 44,196 robots, up 11% over 2021, the previous record. “Over the last five years, we’ve seen a steady acceleration of robot orders as all industries have struggled with a labor shortage and more non-automotive companies recognize the tremendous value automation provides,” said Alex Shikany, vice president of membership and business intelligence, A3. ”After this post-COVID surge, however, we’re seeing a drawback in purchases, exacerbated by the slow economy and high interest rates. While many companies continue to automate, others just don’t have the capital to invest right now, despite their struggle to find workers willing to do many of the dull, dirty and dangerous jobs that remain unfilled.” The ongoing labor shortage, especially in manufacturing (down another 2000 jobs in July, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) remains a key driver of automation.   • 2023 August 2nd Week XZBRG News Recommendation – MESYS Software Introduces Version 07/2023  

    A new version of the MESYS shaft and rolling bearing analysis software including new functionality is available. The bearing analysis software allows the calculation of the load distribution within the bearing and bearing life according to ISO/TS 16281 and it is integrated in a shaft system calculation with additional possibilities like modal analysis, strength calculation for shafts and interfaces to gear calculations. Currently the software is used by customers in 31 countries on 4 continents. The new version is now available. General extensions The bearing databases from Barden/HQW and SKF are updated and a new database from NSK is added. The encrypted Barden/HQW database contains the internal geometry while the SKF and NSK databases only contain catalog data. Custom diagrams can now be defined based on the input in the parameter variation. They can be added to the graphics menu or the main report. Application related diagrams can be defined easily and saved with the calculation file. The software was available in both a 32-bit and a 64-bit version for now 12 years. Now the 32-bit version is not supported anymore and only a 64-bit version is available. Extensions in the bearing calculation The X/Y-factors for the life calculation according to ISO 281 can optionally be calculated from the free contact angle instead of the nominal contact angle. This allows to consider bearing clearance especially for deep groove ball bearings in life according to ISO 281. For the calculation with elastic surroundings now the gap width to the housing can be specified in addition to ring deformations. This allows to differentiate between a cylindrical bearing ring in a non-cylindrical housing and a non-cylindrical bearing ring in a cylindrical housing. Of course, both parts can have roundness deviations in one calculation too. Deformations of bearing rings can now be shown as animation. Extensions in the shaft calculation In the shaft calculation 3D-deformation views are available as animation now. Several options are available to configure 3D-views like enabling or disabling some components like coordinate system or housings. The extended bearing model now allows to consider spacers between two bearings directly now, without adding a part for the spacer. These spacers then have the same temperature and material as the right bearing. For standard cases the definition of spacers will be faster now. The possibilities for CAD-exports have been extended and a preview was added. First a 3D-graphic is shown from which the STEP export can be done. For cylindrical gears and bearings, a detailed geometry is available showing teeth and rolling elements. For 3D-elastic parts orthotropic material data is supported.
